Getting Started - Picking a Topic is Research!

Many of you are used to starting your research by Googling the subject you are investigating, often landing on a Wikipedia page in the process. This kind of search is fine when you are getting a feel for your subject, but is only a first step in your search and selection process.  Wikipedia is a great place to get background information, find other resources and get keywords to help you with further investigation.
Your teacher will likely indicate if you need to include print resources in your research.
When you need to go beyond the surface and find authoritative sources, turn to databases. We have access to a large number of databases via subscriptions. Some databases are free for anyone to use. Click on the buttons below to find links to our subscribed databases and some useful free databases.

oFind More Databases On Your Own
You can find databases on a topic by doing a web search in the following manner.
  1. type in the word "database" followed by a colon
  2. type in the subject for which you would like to find a database

Your results should turn up several databases. If you need help narrowing or refining your search, ask a librarian for assistance!
